I want to recommend to all users of pointing dogs, and especially to those that want to know the beginnings and the foundation of this art, the reading of two books that are the pillars of all that was written in the world on this subject.
| In first place, the Dialogos de la Monteria written by Luis Barahona de Soto. There is not any writer that so early, and so much in depth describes the work of the pointing dog, as this andalusian poet born in Lucena. It was written in Archidona and was dedicated to the young Duke of Osuna. | |
| The other book is the well known Art of Archery and Hunting of Martínez del Espinar, "the one that gives the harquebus to the King", as he describes himself. This book has been called many times the spanish "Bible of Hunting". |
The famous William Arkwright makes an great evaluation of both in The Pointer and their Predecessors. Their most relevant pages on the subject of pointing dogs are included in his book.
They describe the virtues and conditions of the good pointing dogs, their different forms of hunting and how they should be used when hunting partridges.
By reading about the behavior of the dogs in the old times we will reach important conclusions on the performance of our dogs and the changes and progresses, if there is any on this matter.
